Module description

The module will support students throughout the duration of the first placement including: preparation for placement, development of knowledge and skills relevant to practice, support for reflection, professional and personal challenge and for evaluation of own practice.

Module learning outcomes

On successful completion of this module, the [learner] will be able to:
1. Outline and evaluate a range of theories and models of social work practice for a variety of settings and contexts.
2. Demonstrate effective interpersonal skills and establish appropriate and positive relationships with service users, peers and colleagues.
3. Explore and apply concepts and social work methods related to attachment, separation and loss, trauma and resilience.
4. Utilise, implement and evaluate a holistic approach to safeguarding and protection in social work practice.

Module information

Learning activities will include tutor led presentations and group discussions related to practice placement. Sessions will include understanding expectations related to practice placement Level 5 Workbook and Handbook. The assessment of own learning and development needs and identifying placement opportunities to demonstrate development against the Professional Capabilities Framework within the Learning Agreement. The student's formative assessment will be supported in the self-reflective midway review to demonstrate progression and further development for remainder of placement. The learning activities will be concluded with supporting the students in summative assessment and reflection of their final review by demonstrating their development in meeting the Professional Capabilities as expected at the end of first placement.

In the simulated case the student will apply reflective work and integrate knowledge from other modules, practice and self-study to complete the assignment. The assignment will be introduced in a lecture and support via individual tutorial sessions as requested by the student.

Learning and teaching methods

Overview: The module will combine a number of different teaching approaches, incorporating lectures, reflective group work, and student led sessions to reflect on key concepts in social work practice while relating experience to everyday practice. Lectures: Lectures by module lead and colleagues. Independent: Self-study of essential and recommended literature including revisit modules from first and second year for completing assignment. Placement: 70 Day placement in voluntary sector Online: Online resources will be made available on Moodle. Tutorials: It is the student's responsibility to seek tutorial support with the module lead as needed. Skills: As part of their independent learning the student will be expected to engage in a range of research related activities: searching the literature, visiting the library, attending seminars and participating in conferences (where appropriate).
