Module description

The module will provide a sound foundation to support the student to develop critical reflective practice and understand the role of reflection and evidence based practice within contemporary social work. The module has a central focus on social work practice models such as problem solving, task-centred, solution-focussed, narrative and cognitive behavioural approaches. The module will also examine and explore a number of contemporary social work theories.

Module aims

The module aims to provide the student with an introduction and overview of the theoretical approaches and perspectives relevant to the social work role in preparation for 2nd year Placement.

The module will provide a sound foundation to support the student to develop critical reflective practice and understand the role of reflection and evidence based practice within contemporary social work. The module has a central focus on social work practice models such as problem solving, task-centred, solution-focussed, narrative and cognitive behavioural approaches. The module will also examine and explore a number of contemporary social work theories.

The module also include:
Critical thinking and decision making, Assessment and initial understandings of intervention, Exploring interventions through argument and rationales,
Theoretical perspectives and models: the role they play in social work, Practice frameworks: Practice perspectives, Practice theory, Practice Models
Major theories: Systems theory, Psychodynamic theory, Social Learning theory, Conflict theory
Primary perspectives: Strength, feminist, eco-systems
Theoretical and evidence based models of practice of Supervision

Module learning outcomes

On successful completion of this module, the [learner] will be able to:

1. Demonstrate and explore the differences between reflective and critically reflective practice
2. Outline and detail the role of evidence-based practice in effective social work through the utilisation of one or more models of practice
3. Examine the development of one theoretical approach currently used in social work practice to support interventions and the impact of the social work role
4. Outline and explore the use of assessment, planning and evaluation in effective social work interventions
5. Utilise understanding and demonstrate skills related to problem solving, task centred and information sharing activities
6. Explain and demonstrate professional approaches, attitudes, boundaries and responsibilities in different contexts and settings.


Module information

Learning activities will include tutor led presentations and group discussions of the perspectives.

The module further supports the student to explore networks, resources, services, issues and concerns within a local community. To engage fully students will utilise and develop communication and interpersonal skills, organisational skills, contribute to developing intervention skills and produce written documents.
The module will also support the students to explore development of effective social work practice through a five day Community Study. The students will also work with a variety of information sourced and presented in different formats. Each student will be allocated a ward and introduced to a service user and or a professional who understands the ward well. Using the materials and embryonic networks the students will undertake a study of the ward and seek to establish connections with local services and other professionals.

Learning and teaching methods

Overview: The module will combine a number of different teaching approaches, incorporating lectures, group work, computers skill based sessions and student led session to introduce key concepts in social work research while relating it to everyday practice. Lectures: Lectures by module lead and colleagues. Independent: Small group work and independent work on searching the literature and any research related activities. Practice and presentations to be discussed on sphere of practice. The students will also undertake reflective work in small groups. Placement: The student will undertake a Community Development Day and a 5 Day Community Study as a requirement of the programme. Online: Online resources will be made available on Moodle. Tutorials: It is the student’s responsibility to seek tutorial support with the module lead as needed. Skills: The student will attend a Community Development day which includes a group presentation and a 5 Day Community study. Further development days related to readiness for placement and application of the Asset Based Community Development model will be delivered. Students will conduct independent research related to completion of assignments and Community Study.
