Module description

In this module we examine the developments and changes in women`s life and work over the twentieth century with a particular focus on the first British women gaining the right to vote in 1918.

At the same time, in cooperation with external experts (museums curators, archivists, film makers, playwrights) we will explore how women--their voices, stories and achievements--have been represented in museums, plays and films.
We will particularly focus on the celebrations and public representation of the centenary of women`s right to vote. We will think about the local and the national context of the events 100 years ago, but we also want to ask how women have been represented since then. Essex Museums staff as well as many other guest lecturers will help us to think about the benefits and the limitations of showcasing women's achievements over the last 100 years.

Students will have the chance to help decide the final output in discussion with professional experts. Students will be fully supported and guided by academic tutors and professional staff from the museums sector.
