Module description

This unit is linked to all other areas of the programme in that prior study and Wivenhoe House Hotel experience underpin the students' expertise and ability to complete the Project.

During Level 6, the Event Project draws upon new competencies being developed simultaneously through other Level 6 units such as Event Operations, Industry Context and Customer Experience. It involves planning and running an event within the Wivenhoe House or other external venues.

Module aims

This module aims to enable you to:
1. Critically analyse the body of knowledge appropriate to the project brief to synthesise potential solutions to meet client requirements appropriate to the context within which this knowledge will be applied.
- Sourcing and managing information, research methods, analyzing research findings, proposing and justifying conclusions, recommendation and solutions;
- Managing the client relationship;
- Project management skills;
- Risk management and logistical planning;
- Event scheduling and time management;
- Forecasting and capacity management.

2. Conduct a professional presentation to the client, covering the marketing, sales and operational planning for the event, listening to and dealing with questions in a responsive and sensitive manner.
- Client/consultant relationship;
- Presentation and communication skills.

3. Critically analyse the success of the event, to pre-determined and agreed parameters from the client, operationally and in terms of guest satisfaction.
- Target setting and measurement;
- Benchmarking of business KPIs and performance measures;
- Customer satisfaction measures;
- Sustainability and ecological impact analysis;
- Estimating the Return of Investment from events.

4. Work effectively as part of a team, recognising and supporting the needs of the group, taking a lead role if appropriate and managing conflict.

Module learning outcomes

At the conclusion of this module you should be able to:
1. Develop a proposal to meet client requirements so as to be able to implement a commercial event using the Wivenhoe House or other venue.
2. Conduct a professional presentation to the client, covering the marketing, sales and operational planning for the event, listening to and dealing with questions in a responsive and sensitive manner.
3. Critically analyse the success of the event, to pre-determined and agreed parameters from the client, operationally and in terms of guest satisfaction.

Learning and teaching methods

Learning and teaching will take the shape of either classroom based or online lectures and seminars where Wivenhoe House will be used to contextualize theory and illustrate practice. Self-managed learning will supplement seminars where you will be provided with guidance on required reading and on-line learning resources.
