This module will introduce you to the concept of cultural events, weddings and festivals in society. The module will provide the origins and impacts of events in this genre and will consider a range of ethnic, religious, sociological and cultural viewpoints.
This module aims to enable you to:
1. Demonstrate an understanding of the definitions, theories and origins of cultural and ceremonial events.
- Identify weddings in a range of society cultures;
- Understand the historical evolvement of cultural and ceremonial events in society;
- Identify the characteristics of celebratory and social events.
2. Understand market demands and changing trends of events in society.
- Identify market segments for celebratory and society events;
- Identify the needs and personal expectations for celebratory events;
- Recognise changing trends in society for social events.
3. Demonstrate an understanding of the management of weddings and festivals.
- Understand the planning procedures of weddings and festivals;
- Recognise the value of risk management;
- Recognise the procurement of services;
- Understand the value of the relationship of the venue;
- Identify the legalities of society events.
4. Recognise society events in the wider context of the events industry.
- Identify the size of the market of weddings, festivals and cultural events;
- Recognise the legacy of society events;
- Understand the impact of society events on the local environment.

Learning and teaching will take the shape of either classroom based or online lectures and seminars where Wivenhoe House will be used to contextualize theory and illustrate practice. Self-managed learning will supplement seminars where you will be provided with guidance on required reading and on-line learning resources.
