Module description

This module will introduce you to Conference and Events, which is a major supporting revenue stream for venue space hire, food and beverage sales, and accommodation demand within a hotel. The module will provide you with an understanding of the planning, organisation, delivery and evaluation of events, including taking a client brief, conducting a venue show-round, administration procedures, budgeting and risk management.

Module aims

This module aims to enable you to:
1. Demonstrate and reflect on the professional skills and knowledge required for the planning and organisation of events, the delivery of events, and the evaluation of events (pre, during and post-event procedures).
- Understand the process of winning events business from enquiry to confirmation;
- Identify the importance of client management;
- Recognise the need for outsourcing and procurement;
- Develop an understanding of budgeting for events;
- Recognise the value of the ‘lead-in’;
- Develop the administration procedures for the effective management of events;
- Understand the procedures of onsite logistical event management;
- Recognise the need for post-event procedures and evaluation.

2. Understand the importance of effective team-working across event operations in order to meet client and guest expectations.
- Identify the workforce in the events industry;
- Understand employment practices;
- Recognise the value of teams meeting the expectations of clients and guests.

3. Recognise good practise concerning risk, compliance, permissions and legal requirements for the practice of events.
- Understand and evaluate risk management tools and techniques;
- Recognise legislation, compliance and permissions pertaining to events.

4. Understand the structure and context of different events in society.
- Identify the structure of the events industry (MICE);
- Recognise events in society, their impacts and legacy.

Module learning outcomes

At the conclusion of this module you should be able to:

Learning and teaching methods

Learning and teaching will take the shape of either classroom based or online lectures and seminars where Wivenhoe House will be used to contextualize theory and illustrate practice. Self-managed learning will supplement seminars where you will be provided with guidance on required reading and on-line learning resources.
