This module introduces you to the regulatory frameworks for corporate bodies in the UK and sets the key financial documents into context (such as profit and loss, cash flow and balance sheets). Financial ratios and comparative measures are described and analysed in the context of micro-economics both internally and industry wide.
This module aims to enable you to:
1. Interpret key financial documents used by hospitality and event businesses and construct these from given data.
- Profit and loss, cash flow and balance sheets;
- Delivery notes, invoices and accounting systems;
- Industry and sector benchmarks and KPIs.
2. Critically evaluate financial statements and apply KPIs to measure overall and departmental performance.
- Departmental KPIs and their measurement;
- Budgetary allocations across organisations and by department;
- Application of KPI measurements to improve business performance.
3. Understand the micro-economic theory of the firm and how this can be applied to analyse business performance.
- Supply and demand theory, marginal revenue and costing;
- Legislation and its impact;
- Business growth and investment.
4. Apply concepts to actual live data and report on performance.
- Wivenhoe House data analysis and performance measurement;
- Intervention planning and cost control;
- Pricing and profitability measurement.
At the conclusion of this module you should be able to:

Learning and teaching will take the shape of either classroom based or online lectures and seminars where Wivenhoe House will be used to contextualize theory and illustrate practice. Self-managed learning will supplement seminars where you will be provided with guidance on required reading and on-line learning resources.
