Module description

Part I (survival analysis) of this module is an introduction to the methods used to analyse spell duration data. Part II (panel data analysis) of this module is an introduction to the issues and opportunities which arise with panel data and to the main econometric techniques for the analysis of them.


Although these techniques are widely applicable throughout the social sciences, most of the examples used to illustrate the methods are drawn from labour economics.

The aim of this module is:



  • To communicate skills necessary to understand and assess the applications of panel and duration data analysis reported in the literature.

Module learning outcomes

By the end of this module, students will be expected to be able to:



  1. Be equipped with the skills needed to analyse a variety of research and policy problems using panel data methods

This module will be delivered via:

  • One 4-hour lecture per week.

Feedback for this module will occur:

  • Through class meetings where we will go over the answers to problem sets and where you will be able to ask questions about your own method of solution.
  • Answers that will be posted on the website for the module will give you written guidance on the appropriate method to approach the problems, assignments, and tests.
  • Academic support hours where additional questions can be addressed and further feedback obtained.

Students should make sure that they use these methods and resources to understand how to improve their own performance.
