Module description

This module will provide an advanced introduction to cognitive psychology for postgraduate students taking the Masters-level schemes.


The module will run throughout the first term and it will allow students to link between the economics and psychology perspectives on cognition and perception. Material covered will include visual and auditory perception, and visual cognition, which are major areas of cognitive psychology, as defined by the British Psychological Society.

Module aims

The aims of this module are:



  • To examine at an advanced level different methods and techniques used in the scientific study of visual and auditory perception and visual cognition.

  • To provide at an advanced level a significant body of detailed knowledge about the processes involved in auditory, visual and multisensory perception and visual cognition.

  • To provide at an advanced level a broad theoretical background to important contemporary issues in the scientific study of cognition.

Module learning outcomes

By the end of this module, student will be expected to be able to:



  1. Answer advanced factual questions about the processes involved in perception and cognition.

  2. Compare and contrast at an advanced level different theories, methods and techniques used in the scientific study of cognitive processes.

Learning and teaching methods

This module will be delivered via:

  • One 2-hour lecture per week.
  • Three seminars.

The lectures will be delivered in the Psychology department. The seminars will be delivered in the Economics department.
