The focus of the module will be the development and employment of techniques enabling students to create an independent piece of writing for the stage, screen or radio.
- To Better Understand and Apply the artistic, intellectual and logistical challenges relating to the creation of dramatic texts for stage or screen.
- To cultivate the student’s creative voice within a playwriting /screenwriting form
- To Further examine critical concepts and practice in stage-writing / screen-writing
- To establish a thorough understanding of the research needed for a larger scale creative work and the structures and styles necessary for producing such a work
- To introduce students to the level of focus and discipline needed to complete work of a professional standard.
- Practical understanding of how to effectively employ the conventions of dramatic language, theatrical conventions, and dramatic structure.
- Practical understanding of the processes and conventions for producing and developing a script for the stage or screen
- Ability to source and utilise research materials in relation to a creative project.
- Further develop skills towards the creative application of the knowledge acquired in first two years of study.
Assessment
This module will culminate in the creation of a written play script, which will act as the main form of assessment. This will be
supplemented with a portfolio of research material and a reflective critical analysis of the student’s own work.
- Original play, written for stage, film or radio: 60 minutes playing time (80%)
- Research portfolio and critical analysis: 2000 words (20%)
Learning will be supported by occasional lectures. Teaching will take place through tutorials and feedback on interim, written assignments.
