Module description

Terms One, Two and Three - Advanced Gymnastics/Acrobatics/Tumbling


As there is a continued emphasis on movement and physical skills, you will need to maintain a suitable level of personal fitness and bodily strength and flexibility. A gymnastic ability will underpin much of the work undertaken in other units of the course. During Year 2, this module will also teach you disciplines specific to theatrical / artistic performance. You will continue to develop both individual and team-related skills. The experience of applying a variety of skills to differing performance situations will create a strong cornerstone for the work that will be required in the final year.


Martial Arts


You will continue to train in Martial Arts. As your skills and knowledge expand you may progress further in status through additional martial arts grading stages. Taking the grounding developed in Year One, this unit will now focus on more demanding skills - which will foster overall movement qualities. This year also sees the blending of martial skills with stage combat.


Terms One, Two and Three – Movement and Dance


The Year Two, Acting and Stage Combat Movement unit is a three-part continual assessment.


Movement Skills in terms 1 and 2 of Year Two will explore the physical body in connection with the actor's imagination. The student will learn and develop a process using movement as an integral part of acting by investigating: character, relationships, and the physical world of the play. In addition to the creative training there will be a continuation of bodywork for coordination, alignment, strength, flexibility, and stamina.


Term 3 will focus on social dance, to learn the dance of a different era and the social and gender politics that go with it. While dancing there will be a specific focus on musicality, leading and following, and sustaining character inside a form.

Module aims

Advanced Gymnastics/Acrobatics/Tumbling



  • To understand the relevant safety practices and protocols

  • To create/encourage a positive mind/body connection and body confidence

  • To develop timing, balance, co-ordination, strength, suppleness

  • To be able to relate the physical theories to the general aims of the course


Martial Arts



  • Further develop a proficient use of both the right and left sides of the body

  • Further develop body control and overall discipline when working in a physical manner

  • Further develop understanding of a range of different fighting responses, and apply this knowledge in practical sessions

  • To broaden the skill base of Aikido techniques and proficiency in their execution

  • Further develop co-ordination, strength and suppleness


Movement and Dance



  • To be able to transfer information gleaned in a text to physical action

  • To develop in movement a psychophysical relationship that reflects the emotional and physical connection of two or more characters

  • The creation of physical images and environment of an imagined world

  • To engage in the etiquette of another era in a dance form

Martial Arts

Movement and Dance



  1. Continued development of coordination, strength, flexibility, alignment, and imagination

  2. Confident use the body and movement as part of creative process for acting

  3. Able to sustain and communicate character and relationships through physicality

  4. Work as individual and as part of an ensemble
