BA W496 Acting and Community Engagement
This second year module for Acting and Community Theatre has a focus on community development through access to theatre and celebratory performance. Students will extend their acting technique and experience through creating performances in a range of forms, styles and environments.
A variety of acting styles will be explored including physical theatre, object manipulation and outdoor performance, extending technical and acting crafts. Students will participate in the creation of a street theatre festival.

Learning Outcomes -Students will be able to demonstrate ability to:

5. apply physical and vocal skills with confidence in demanding environments

Additional coursework information
Students are assessed on:
1. Engagement with the community, demonstrating knowledge of the audience, use of suitable communication strategies and choice of material
2. Ability to work with discipline, commitment, spontaneity and preparation
3. Application of creative inventiveness to acting, devising, performance and workshops
4. Application of research to performance and workshops
5. Effectiveness of ensemble work in the performance environment
6. apply the principles of community theatre in performances
7. apply voice, movement, acting and music skills in performance and workshops
8. Continuous assessment of contribution to each project’s process and final performance outcome;
9. Continuous assessment is conducted by a team of tutors and project work is video-recorded wherever possible. (NB This is subject to restrictions in some community settings such as in schools and with vulnerable groups.)
The final year mark for the module will be the unweighted average of three individual project marks.
Exam format definitions
- Remote, open book: Your exam will take place remotely via an online learning platform. You may refer to any physical or electronic materials during the exam.
- In-person, open book: Your exam will take place on campus under invigilation. You may refer to any physical materials such as paper study notes or a textbook during the exam. Electronic devices may not be used in the exam.
- In-person, open book (restricted): The exam will take place on campus under invigilation. You may refer only to specific physical materials such as a named textbook during the exam. Permitted materials will be specified by your department. Electronic devices may not be used in the exam.
- In-person, closed book: The exam will take place on campus under invigilation. You may not refer to any physical materials or electronic devices during the exam. There may be times when a paper dictionary,
for example, may be permitted in an otherwise closed book exam. Any exceptions will be specified by your department.
