Module description

The Foundation Skills – Production Arts module will enable students to:

- Understand the roles and responsibilities within the costume, prop and scenic art departments within the production process.
- Understand the role of dresser on a production.
- Develop confidence in their sewing skills. Understand the basics of prop making materials and techniques and how it can support and develop the stage management skill set.
- Understand the basics of scenic art materials and techniques and how it can support and develop the stage management skill set.
- Use a working script as a source for production information.
- Apply a range of techniques in the areas of costumes, prop making and scenic art.
- Develop relevant computer literacy.
- Understand the use of rehearsal notes.
- React positively to changes communicated throughout the rehearsal process.
- Use appropriate theatre terminology.
- Gain an understanding of Health & Safety and the importance of risk assessment.

Module aims

To support the development of the stage management skills in the areas of costume, prop making and scenic
art at introductory level.
- introduce students to roles and responsibilities within the wardrobe department (e.g. understanding the role of the dresser)
- introduce students to methods and processes that enable them to
- interpret texts and designs effectively;
- think analytically;
- research possible outcomes;
- communicate ideas, possible solutions, and technical information
- teach basic costume skills – enabling costume maintenance and basic sewing skills
- teach basic prop making skills
- teach basic scenic art skills
- develop methods of problem solving, negotiation, and personal management
- develop ability to work effectively both independently and collaboratively
- Introduce students to the importance of Health & Safety and risk assessments

Module learning outcomes

By the end of the module students will have understanding of:

1. The roles and responsibilities within the costume, prop and scenic art departments, and how these skills can support the stage manager.
2. Basic sewing and costume maintenance techniques
3. The role of the dresser
4. Basic Prop making techniques and materials
5. Basic scenic art techniques and materials.
6. Awareness of Health and Safety procedures
7. How to manage a team
8. How to work independently

Additional coursework information

Assessment is based on the ability to achieve the learning outcomes of the module related to the overall criteria contained in the Year One Assessment Form and Grading Descriptors. Summative assessment is undertaken at the end of the term in which the module is taken and marks issued to students on the Assessment Form together with written tutor comments. Students must pass both elements of assessment to pass the module.

  • In-person, open book: Your exam will take place on campus under invigilation. You may refer to any physical materials such as paper study notes or a textbook during the exam. Electronic devices may not be used in the exam.
  • In-person, open book (restricted): The exam will take place on campus under invigilation. You may refer only to specific physical materials such as a named textbook during the exam. Permitted materials will be specified by your department. Electronic devices may not be used in the exam.
  • In-person, closed book: The exam will take place on campus under invigilation. You may not refer to any physical materials or electronic devices during the exam. There may be times when a paper dictionary, for example, may be permitted in an otherwise closed book exam. Any exceptions will be specified by your department.
