Module description

This module introduces skills in camera use and editing. The module emphasises an understanding of the technical processes underlying the students' own practical work. Students will be taught how best to capture performance on camera, which may include live performance, rehearsal footage, marketing material, documentary footage, and short films. Introduction to offline editing of video will lead to students editing their own work.

Film making/editing:

Introduction to creative approaches to filmmaking

Introduction to film styles and film grammar

Introduction to film production imperatives, cinematic and editing technique

Resourcing, researching and producing a short film

Digital Arts Skills:

Understanding digitals arts in the online world

Digital arts in context – case studies and critical approaches to analysis

Creating and using graphics for contextual application (e.g. use online, use in film, use in print etc)

Creating audio for use in film

Refining and integrating digital media

Module learning outcomes

By the end of this module, students will be expected to be able to:

Have knowledge and understanding of the different roles necessary to execute a simple film project;

Have effective and safe use of video and related audio equipment;

Have knowledge of and basic facility with one digital editing package;

Establish an understanding of the principles of cinematography and sound recording;

Have knowledge of how to best capture video footage on a range of devices;

Have the ability to coordinate and manage a small team.
