Module description

This module will focus on developing skills in ocean sampling and marine conservation and will be based at a marine research institute, Archipleagos IMC, Samos, Greece. You will gain skills in ocean sampling, field and laboratory techniques, project design, data acquisition, analysis and dissemination.


This module will focus on specific employer led oceanographic and marine conservation skills through research projects focussed on four main topics: oceanographic sampling, micro plastics, sea grass mapping and fisheries surveys. We will use state of the art equipment and technology and Arc View GIS-based interpretation of biodiversity data to enhance your marine biology research and technical skills

The aim of this module is:



  • To develop skills in ocean sampling and marine conservation.

By the end of this module, students will be expected to be able to:



  1. Understand the theory and practice of key techniques used in oceanographic research.

  2. Demonstrate competence in data presentation, analysis and interpretation, numeracy, information retrieval and written communication.

  3. Work effectively as part of a team to produce, analyse and present experimental data.

  2. Side scan sonar surveys from a research vessel.

  3. Underwater video techniques a from research vessel.

  4. Boat based Marine mammal surveys.

  5. Microplastic analysis of fish, inverts, water and sediment.

  6. Socioeconomic interview techniques.

  7. Operation of a marine ROV (remotely operated vehicle).

  8. Drone operation for marine surveys.

  9. ArcGIS – spatial analysis of data and amp production.

  10. Reef master software for analysis of seabed habitats.
