Module description

The purpose of this module is to enable participants to obtain knowledge of supply chains and logistics in practice together with an understanding of key theoretical issues explaining good practice, problems and challenges to effective supply change management in a global context.


This module will allow students to investigate large, globally networked organisations through lectures, case studies and group projects. The module will offer insights in supply chain management, the evolution of the management of logistics in the local and in highly networked global environments, and provide students with tools with which to engage supply chain managers.

Module aims

The aims of this module are:



  • To offer students in-depth insights into the work of major supply chain and logistics operations from around the world, especially in relation to current practice.

  • Enable students to derive a practical understanding of the application and use of key technologies, management practice, network arrangements and computational tools supporting real world management of supply chains.

  • Help students acquire an appreciation of theories and key concepts of supply chain management and their application in practice.

  • Equip students with know-how and key tools with which to engage in supply chain management practice in both local and global environments.

Module learning outcomes

By the end of this module, students will be expected to be able to:



  1. Obtain up to date knowledge of supply chain management in practice.

  2. Use different concepts and ideas with which to manage supply chains in different environments.

  3. Acquire an appreciation of supply chain management functions supported by the leading theories and concepts.

  4. Apply their knowledge in practice as general and supply chain managers for different organisations.

The module is structured along the themes of key supply chain activities and provides students with an overview, discussion and analysis of contemporary challenges with the aim to enhance your professional and management capabilities.

Learning and teaching methods

This module will be delivered in Week 25 via:

  • One 4-hour session each morning.
  • One 3-hour session each afternoon.

Pre-module work: Students will need to read supply chain-related news articles for your understanding of the significance of supply chain management. 

One of the sessions will be given over to group work.

Private study time for the module will involve reading module and external material, group work and private work ahead of the submission of your module assignment.
