Module description

This module focuses on exploring the contribution of organisations' Learning and Talent Development strategies and practices (L&D) with respect to both formulating and achieving organisational objectives.


The design and practice of the L&D function, however, is necessarily contextually embedded, bearing in mind, for instance, the impact of national contexts or competing notions of talent and success.


This module, therefore, will seek to develop students' critical understanding of opportunities, but also limitations, of the L&D function at national, organisational, group and individual levels. The module will create opportunities for applied learning and continuous professional development, along with enabling learners to reflect critically on theory and practice from an ethical and professional standpoint.

Module aims

The aim of this module is:



  • To enable the development of intellectual, social, professional and personal skills to perform effectively in Learning and Development functions, as well as in associated HRM and people development roles.

Module learning outcomes

By the end of this module, students will be expected to be able to:



  1. Critically analyse and evaluate the formulation and implementation of processes of learning and talent development strategies for defining and achieving current and future effectiveness at national, organisational, group and individual levels.

  2. Critically evaluate the potential and appropriateness of a range of learning and talent development strategies, policies and methods with reference to relevant contextual factors.

  3. Lead the initiation, development and implementation of learning and talent development strategies, interventions and activities.

  4. Work effectively and collaboratively with key internal and external partners and stakeholders to diagnose and manage learning and talent development response to problems and issues and ensure clarity of role and contribution to agreed responses.

  5. Critically assess the role and influence the politics of learning and talent development policy and practice in a range of contexts.

  6. Act ethically and professionally with a demonstrated commitment to equality of opportunity and diversity in learning and talent development and to continuous personal and professional development.

Learning and teaching methods

This module will be delivered via:

  • Five 3-hour sessions, incorporating up to an hour of formal lecture, and group discussions, presentations and practical activities based on real life cases and information (which students are required to prepare ahead).

Please note that beyond the 3-hourly sessions, students are expected to dedicate a considerable amount of time towards the module. On average, students will spend 10 hours per week on this module, carrying out any of the following activities:

  1. Reading core and support texts.
  2. Writing up lecture notes.
  3. Writing up reflective learning log.
  4. Researching and preparing for the coursework.
  5. Researching and preparing for weekly in-class activities.

Students are also advised to take advantage of the lecturer's support hours to clarify any doubts.
