Module Description

The Management Psychology course is designed to introduce students to the study of the individual both in the organisation and in relation to the practice of organising. As such, the course gives attention to the relationship between behaviour and experience. That is to say, it looks at what is behind the behaviour which we can readily observe. Management psychology examines how people construct and account for themselves in relation to organisations. It looks at the implications of technology and bureaucracy in the formation of consciousness. The course challenges taken-for-granted assumptions about organisations and offers insights into the meaning of work. Students will be encouraged to develop a broad understanding of the social and political regulation of the organisation and the part which psychology plays in interpreting this. The course uses a variety of media including film and video, use of novels, art and theatre in order to illustrate the various concepts used. Students will be expected to develop a critical awareness of the organisational and social issues relating to work.
