Module description

This module focuses on the management of innovation activities and how businesses may benefit from the development and application of technology. It introduces the management of innovation and technology as a multiple perspective approach, which incorporates the key areas of the business and management together. The unit provides a clear overview of the critical theories and concepts of innovation management. It also highlights the issues and factors involved in the management and development of new products, new services, new technologies, and new business models. Since managing innovation and technology is crucial to a firm's success, understanding the above factors can lead to the success of the innovative firm in the short and long-term.

Module aims

The module is designed to:
• Introduce and critically evaluate innovation management theories and concepts.
• Demonstrate the various techniques used to manage innovation and technology successfully within a firm.
• Demonstrate the key activities and critical decision points involved in the development of new products, services, technologies, and business models.
• Examine the fundamental role of innovation and technology in delivering value to the business

Module learning outcomes

Upon successful completion of the module, students should be able to:
1. Understand the fundamental concepts and models of innovation management and how firms can benefit from technology
2. Critically evaluate both academic theories and business practices within a diverse range of innovation case studies
3. Critically evaluate the key challenges and benefits of the management of innovation and technology within different industries including pharmaceutical, retail, automotive, and aerospace.

Coursework / Exam Students will be required to produce one coursework as individual essay (3000 words). Reassessment Exam resit Coursework Submission Requirements The assignment should not exceed 3000 (+/-10%) words in length. It should be word-processed, double spaced, and written in an appropriate academic style. The assignment should have a clear introduction and a conclusion. You should ensure that you have fully acknowledged the work of others in the body of the text. Coursework will be processed with plagiarism detection software. The assignment should include a full list of references for all articles, books and other sources (e.g. Internet sites) that have been cited in the assignment.

Exam format definitions

  • Remote, open book: Your exam will take place remotely via an online learning platform. You may refer to any physical or electronic materials during the exam.
  • In-person, open book: Your exam will take place on campus under invigilation. You may refer to any physical materials such as paper study notes or a textbook during the exam. Electronic devices may not be used in the exam.
  • In-person, open book (restricted): The exam will take place on campus under invigilation. You may refer only to specific physical materials such as a named textbook during the exam. Permitted materials will be specified by your department. Electronic devices may not be used in the exam.
  • In-person, closed book: The exam will take place on campus under invigilation. You may not refer to any physical materials or electronic devices during the exam. There may be times when a paper dictionary, for example, may be permitted in an otherwise closed book exam. Any exceptions will be specified by your department.
