Module description

In this module, we examine a range of cases typically encountered in financial management practice. In practice, financial management employs a set of tools and techniques. While the fundamental principles of corporate financial decision making are covered in earlier modules such as BE311 Corporate Finance, in this module, we study the tools that support the corporate financial decision-making process. The focus is on the applied aspects of financial management within a case context.

Module aims

The aim of this module is:



  • To provide an understanding of the workings of modern financial management techniques and the skills to employ the techniques in support of corporate decision making processes.

Module learning outcomes

By the end of this module, students will be expected to be able to:



  1. Contextualise financial management within firms’ business and economic environments. 

  2. Understand and employ, within a case context, relevant models and techniques of investment appraisal, managing firms’ liquidity needs, balancing firms’ long-term financing and investment needs, mitigating interest rate and foreign exchange risks, business valuation.

  1. Apply valuation techniques, appraise investment and financing choices, balancing liquidity needs as well as mitigating interest rate and foreign exchange risks.

  2. Contextualise the impact of the economic and ethical environments on financial management decisions.

  3. Apply the relevant theoretical knowledge in business practice, especially financial management techniques, to analyse business cases.

  4. Synthesize and assess information, while thinking critically, when making decisions as a financial manager. 

Module information

The module is designed for students who seek exemption from ACCA Financial Management module, and has similar content as that module.

Learning and teaching methods

This module will be delivered via:

  • One 2-hour lecture per week.
  • One 1-hour tutorial per week.
  • One revision lecture in the summer term.

Lectures may be held either online or on campus, details and timings of which will be on your timetables.

The tutorial associated with a lecture is usually held the week following the lecture. The tutorials are usually held online.

There may be times when a paper dictionary, for example, may be permitted in an otherwise closed book exam. Any exceptions will be specified by your department.
