Module description

The last two decades have seen a wide experimentation in the value proposition that underlies a business. New business models exemplified by firms like Amazon, AirBnB, and Uber have been enabled by new technological changes and fired the imagination of countless young entrepreneurs all over the world. This course moves away from the heroics to take a scholarly view of what is involved in business model innovation.

Students in their final year, who have finished studying about business plans, will find this course useful. It will teach them to think about the strategy implicit in different types of business models and to appreciate that business models can both leverage a strength and protect the company against competitive threats.

Module aims

The course aims to give students a basic understanding of business model innovation, to classify the various types of business model innovation and to learn how business models can emphasise a firm’s strengths and protect it from its vulnerabilities. Each topic will be taught using case studies which students will be expected to read in advance of the lecture and which will provide the focal point of discussion during the hour long seminar that follows the lecture.
