Module description

This module will enhance the current curriculum and educational structure and show developments in terms of internationalisation and the way technology is used in necessitating certain changes in the industry.


This module fits conveniently with the second year's particular focus on experiential learning, by encouraging students to think more about the different ways of developing and offering new tourism-related products, and in the process to become more familiar with key industry players and intermediaries.

Module aims

The aims of this module are:



  • To specifically focus on exploring the international dimension of the service industries.

  • To bring together insights from International Business and to reveal how the industry has become increasingly global in its operations.

  • To analyse the players that have emerged in the service industries.

Module learning outcomes

By the end of this module, students will be expected to be able to:



  1. Understand the notion of service sector internationalisation and the significance of its global value chain.

  2. Have a critical awareness of, on the one hand, the impact expert and creative talent has on client relationship management while, on the other hand, of international business networks and intercultural communications on the production of services.

  3. Identify opportunities and challenges of service sector intermediaries.

  4. Have a critical understanding of Information and Communication Technologies (ICT) role in the service sector distribution and the effect of social media on the service sector.

  5. Define key concepts and factors determining the sustainability of the service sector business.

  6. Develop a critical awareness of Knowledge-Intensive Services (KIS) and their related opportunities and challenges.

Module information

The module will combine both theoretical engagement and experiential learning. The industry highlights the importance of equipping students not only with basic concepts, but also with knowledge and skills in terms of how tourism products are distributed in this increasingly internationalised and internet-driven industry.

Learning and teaching methods

This module will be delivered via:

  • Lectures from the departmental staff and guest speakers, together with
  • Seminars; discussion of case studies and journal articles; class exercises; individual and group work; signposting to additional resources.
