Biography

I graduated from Leicester University in 1965  and then spent 3 years at Birmingham University before moving to the post of Lecturer in Mathematical Statistics at the University of Newcastle-upon-Tyne. In 1973 I moved to the University of Essex, becoming part-retired in 2008 and fully retired in 2011. I am now employed part-time.

In 1986 I was, for 6 months, a visiting professor at the University of Dokkyo, just north of Tokyo in Japan.

I have been an external examiner  at U. Zimbabwe, Harare (1994 -1996) and external assessor (for an internal promotion) at U Adelaide, Australia. 2005.

I have given lecture courses at the ICPSR summer school, U Michigan, Ann Arbor, USA, 1980 (4 weeks); Dokkyo University, Japan 1986 (10 weeks), Universit´e Pierre Mend`es-France Grenoble, France, 1994 (1 week); ITAM, Mexico, 2000 (1 week).

1. Peculiarities of microarray data.

2. The interactions between bases, codons, amino-acids and proteins.

 

Research interests

All my research has centered on modelling and interpreting real-life data. During my career I have specialised on circular data (e.g. flight directions of released pigeons), spatial data (e.g. locations of trees in a forest), cross-classified data (e.g. do upper middle class husbands marry same class wives?), voting data (e.g. what advantage does the sitting MP have in the next election). In this century I have specialised in data relating to rainfall (e.g. rain gauges, weather radars, microwave links and disdrometers [which measure individual raindrops]), and in methods for locating production flaws in microarrays (a tool for examining thousands of genes simultaneously).

Additional information

I have shot for both Northumberland and Essex (.22). These days my activities include bird-watching, cooking,  non-strenuous gardening, and helping out once a month at the Abberton centre of the Essex Wildlife Trust. I have two sons (Dr. Robin and Rev. Christopher) and four grand-children (Ella, Molly, Imogen, and Daisy).
