Prospective Undergraduates

Scholarships

Applicants should note that the information below applies to candidates currently applying who wish to start their degrees in October 2012, the Department is likely to be re-examining its attitude to scholarships in the light of developments in British higher education and  that the availability of, and/or criteria for, scholarships for candidates admitted after October 2012 may well be different. In particular there may well in future be a limited total sum for scholarships in any given year which will be shared out according to certain rules

What are the Entrance Scholarships worth?

Standard Scholarships (worth £1,000 over two years) are awarded to those who obtain ABB or AAC (including A/A* in Mathematics) in three full A-levels.

Major Scholarships (worth £2000 over two years) are awarded to those who obtain AAA (including A/A* in Mathematics) in three full A-levels.

To qualify for one of these awards you must have either

  • placed Essex as your firm UCAS choice, or
  • been made an EE offer.

Are there limits on the number of scholarships offered?

No!

Are the scholarships available for joint-honours students?

Yes, but at half-value.

Are you taking Further Mathematics A-level?

If you are, then, if

  • you put Essex as your firm UCAS choice, and
  • you obtain a B, A/A* grade in Further mathematics, then

we give you £250!

This award is in addition to any scholarship, and is not affected by grades obtained in other subjects.

Dangoor Scholarships

The Iraqi philanthropist Naim Dangoor has awarded the University a huge sum of money to attract promising Science students. The details are given on the Eliahou Dangoor Scholarship page.

Any student from the UK (paying home fees) who qualifies for a standard scholarship or a major scholarship and who is taking either a single-honours mathematics degree, or a joint degree with computing or biology, will be eligible for an additional Dangoor scholarship. However, the Department has just seven Dangoor Scholarships to award, so, in the event of there being more than seven qualifying students, the Department's Scholarships Committee will need to make a judgement as to which students will be the successful ones.

Final Year Scholarships

The Department is offering a scholarship of £500 for single honours final year students provided they have obtained an average of 70% or above in their second year.

Can you be eligible for more than one scholarship? Yes!

A student with an A/A* in Maths, an A/A* in Further Maths, and an A/A* in a third subject, doing a single-honours degree, and continuing to do well throughout the three years (doubtless ending with a First Class Honours degree!) would receive £1,250 in year 1, £1,000 in year 2, and £500 in year 3, for an overall total of £2,750. If the student is also awarded a Dangoor scholarship, then this would further boost the total to £3,750.
