Prospective Postgraduate Students

Funding Opportunities

University of Essex Departmental Scholarships

Departmental PhD and PGT Scholarship support

As part of the University scholarship scheme, the Department has funds available to assist outstanding students who would otherwise be unable to study at Essex. Decisions on how the money in the scholarship fund will be awarded will be made at the Department's Scholarship committee meeting which will take place at the end of May each year. We may also be able in certain circumstances to offer funds to research students starting in January or April, please ask the Graduate Director for further information.

The Department has a flexible attitude to the distribution of these funds: it may prefer to give partial support to a number of PhD students  but will reserve the right to use all the funds towards supporting one individual if it is firmly convinced that that student is of particularly high promise. It will be a condition that applicants also apply for any other awards for which they are eligible. For Postgraduate Taught opportunities this is also dependant on how much funds the Department has left, generally awarding a small number of excellent students a maximum of £2,000 towards their tuition fees.

Some further details of the University of Essex Scholarships may be found on the Student Finance page.

Students wishing to be considered for a scholarship should attach a note to their completed application form. This note should detail the following:

  • the other sources of funding for which they are currently applying (with amounts);
  • the other sources of funding that they have successfully obtained (with amounts);
  • the total annual amount of funding which they require in order to be able to study at Essex.

The Department Of Mathematical Sciences: Winsten Scholarship

The Winsten Scholarship is named after Professor Chris Winsten. This award will be made at the same time as the Departmental Scholarships above and the successful applicant will be chosen at the Department's Scholarship committee meeting which will take place at the end of May each year.

Chris Winsten was an internationally renowned mathematician who was on the staff of Colchester’s Essex University for more than 25 years. His reputation is based on his application of mathematical and statistical ideas to areas of economics leading to the eponymous Prais-Winsten transformation still used by modern economists today and to the groundbreaking Beckmann-McGuire-Winsten (1955) approach to transportation economics. Chris had an intuitive geometrical approach that found solutions to difficult analytic problems. He left the bulk of his fortune to further the reputation of Essex mathematics.

The Department of Mathematical Sciences: Townsend Scholarship

The Townsend Scholarship supports students who are in financial difficulty.

University of Essex Silberrad Scholarships

The University of Essex Silberrad Scholarships will be awarded by the University to provide support for its own graduates to pursue PhD study. The Scholarships are funded by a legacy from the Silberrad Estate, which was bequeathed to the University in 2007. The first three Scholarships were awarded in 2008-09.
