Seminars for 2016/17

16 May 2013: Polynomials of low degree and Fano varieties (Summer Term 2012/13)

Dr Gavin Brown from Mathematical Sciences, Loughborough University

At 14:00 in 6.314.

Algebraic varieties are the solutions of polynomial equations in several variables. At a coarse level, varieties are divided into three different classes, distinguished by geometric properties such as genus.
The degree of the defining polynomials is a clumsy but useful guide. I will explain this reviewing the situation for complex curves along the way, and then go on to describe which classes have finite classifications and how we can build maps of 'all' varieties to guide attempts at these classifications.

This event is open to the general public.
