Corporate Identity Usage Guidelines
The Head of Marketing and Student Recruitment is responsible for
the oversight and evolution of the University's visual identity
policy. Should you wish to include the University logo in a
publication or on a website please e-mail branding; non essex users
should add @essex.ac.uk to create a full e-mail address.
Staff will advise on appropriate use of the logo, and provide you
with high resolution versions of the logo if necessary. Please do
not download the logo from the University website as this will not
be high enough resolution for use. Below is a basic outline of the
guidelines:
Artwork
The University logo must only
be reproduced using the original artwork. It must never be redrawn,
regenerated or altered in any way. The University's logo combines
the symbol (consisting of the two purple and three red squares) and
a carefully designed version of the University title called a style
name. As this represents the whole logo, under no circumstances
should the symbol and style name be separated or used independently
of each other.
Colour Reproduction
Two- and four-colour process
Wherever possible, the University logo should be reproduced using
the two corporate colours:
- Essex Red = Pantone 1795 (four-colour values: C=0%, M=94%,
Y=100%, B=0%)
- Essex Purple = Pantone 260 (four-colour values: C=60%, M=100%,
Y=0%, B=34%)
Single-colour process
When it is not possible to use the two corporate colours, the
University logo can be reproduced in one of the following colour ways:
- Essex purple and 50% Essex purple
- Essex red and 50% Essex red
- Black and 50% black
Reversed out
When it is not practical/economical to use the two-, four- or
single-colour process, the University logo may appear in white, on a
dark coloured background, reversed out of a solid colour.
No other colour ways
are permitted.
Exclusion Zone and Positioning
Internal users using the logo need to go through the Printing
Centre on campus for the production of all literature being sent
externally of the University. They will ensure the University logo
is used correctly.
External users will normally be using the University logo in an
'endorsement' situation, which means that the logo will 'float'. As
far as possible it should always be surrounded by white space
equivalent to at least one square's width and no lettering should
appear within the imaginary rectangle formed by the logo. If the
logo is to be used in any other position other than as an
endorsement, please e-mail branding; non essex users should add @essex.ac.uk
to create a full e-mail address.
In all cases, any usage of the University logo needs approval by
the Head of Marketing and Student Recruitment.
