7 November 2011 – Olympic flame comes to Colchester and Southend
Colchester and Southend, home to two of the University’s campuses, will
welcome the London 2012 Olympic Torch on 6 and 7 July as it makes its
journey to the Olympic Village in Stratford. A total of 17 communities across
the county will be welcoming the Torch as part of a 70 day Olympic Relay which
starts at Land’s End on 19 May. It will travel an estimated 8,000 miles around
the UK until it reaches the Olympic Stadium on 27 July 2012 to mark the start of
the Games. More details on activities planned to welcome the flame will be
announced in 2012.

28 October 2011 – Mapping country performance – the Olympic dream
The Institute for Democracy and Conflict Resolution (IDCR) at the University
of Essex has joined forces with award-winning marketing, pr, design and research
company, Mackman Group, to produce a
new online resource
that shows the various conditions countries sending athletes to the London
Olympics in 2012.

26 October 2011 – The 2012 experience: Series of talks
The University will be hosting a
series of free talks focused around the 2012 Olympics on 31 October, 1
and 3 November at the Minories in Colchester. Speakers will address how the
2012 Olympics are more than a sporting event, and have important political,
economic, socio-cultural and historical aspects.

26 August 2011 – Special Olympian visits University
Venezuela’s first Olympian,
Julio César León, who competed in track cycling at the 1948 London Olympics,
visited the University as part of a tour of preparations for London 2012.
