Undergraduate Student Profiles
Samantha Joanne Bibby, Second Year BA Modern Languages
The
course offered at Essex was exactly what I wanted and the University has a great
reputation. My only concern was the distance from home, but when I visited I
discovered the fantastic transport links which made travelling so easy. I have
enjoyed all of my modules so far, but I have particularly liked learning about
the French and German languages, as well as about German, Austrian and Swiss
culture. All the staff in the Department are supportive, always willing to help,
and really easy to talk to.
Bartosz Brzรณzka, Third Year BA
Modern Languages
I chose to study at Essex as it is known to be one of the best
in the field of languages and linguistics. As the University is very
multicultural, I am also able to practice foreign languages outside of the
classroom. I settled in very easily; from the very first day I was able to make
friends with people from around the world. I decided to focus on learning
languages and, as part of this, I decided to study abroad for a year in Spain. I
have found the Department of Language and Linguistics to be very well organised,
friendly and supportive.
Jo Billing, Fourth Year BA Modern Languages
Settling into life
at Essex was easy; living in the Towers meant I immediately had 15 new friends,
and this group just got bigger as I met people on the course. The Department is
full of friendly and helpful staff, and great students, who get along really
well both inside and outside the classroom. In my third year I spent a year
abroad as an English teaching assistant in Germany for nine months and then went
to Italy for four months. These experiences were great for me as a person and
form my course; there's only one way to really get to grips with a language - go
to the country and live there!
Iolanda
Costa Gomes, BA Politics and Modern Languages (French and Spanish)
After graduating, Iolanda went on to study personnel management at postgraduate
level.
Along with positive recommendations and the multicultural campus, my decision
to study at Essex was made easier by it offering me the perfect course: the rare
opportunity to study two modern languages alongside politics.
I made lots of friends very early on and enjoyed getting involved with
societies and events. Both of my departments made it easy to settle in
academically, with friendly, helpful and supportive staff and lecturers. Even on
my year abroad in Spain, staff at Essex kept in regular contact with me.
The transferable skills I acquired during my studies have been very valuable
to me; currently for my postgraduate course but also for my future career
prospects working for international companies, especially as language skills are
highly desirable.
Ioanna Elli Papoutsani, BA Modern Languages
After graduating Ioanna went on to study MA Media and Public Relations

It only took me a short time to adapt to university and life in the U. All
the staff were supportive and helpful and the events put on by the Student's
Union really helped me to meet people and settle in.
The Department of Language and Linguistics is one of the most organised and
approachable departments that I have come across. Both the academic and support
staff gave guidance and encouragement throughout my time at Essex. The less
formal relationship with the staff meant that I could really get the most out of
my academic experience.
I would not change one bit of my time at Essex. It was the best decision I
have made and I could not dream of a better student experience than the one I
had at Essex.
