Why Choose Essex for Modern Languages?

Students walking to North TowersThe Department of Language and Linguistics at Essex has been running degrees in Modern Languages for four decades, specialising in five major European languages (French, German, Italian, Portuguese and Spanish).

In a recent Review of Modern Foreign Languages provision in higher education in England, the Higher Education Funding Council for England (HEFCE) notes that ‘[i]n the highly competitive job market of today, foreign language skills are at a premium and add great value to a candidate’s portfolio of skills, giving them a competitive edge when applying for jobs.’

More to Offer

We’ve spent the past year revising and extending our range of Modern Languages degree schemes and courses, listening to what our students want, and introducing new schemes and new options designed to meet their aspirations.

There are lots of reasons why Essex is one of the places to be if you’re looking for a degree in Modern Languages:

  • We offer a wide choice of degree schemes and courses catering for a wide range of interests, so you’re sure to find lots to interest you. You can take up your chosen languages at a range of different levels – e.g. from scratch, or GCSE level, or A1 level or A2 level.
  • The main focus of our Modern Language courses is on developing practical language skills (e.g. translation and interpreting skills, oral and aural skills, business and internet skills), and on contemporary society, popular culture and media (especially film).
  • The campus location of the university means that everything you need is close at hand (library, lecture theatres, classrooms, computing labs, staff offices, sports and leisure facilities, shops, cafeterias, bars, entertainment) and there are security staff to attend to your safety.
  • The campus is on a green-field site (750 acres of parkland with three lakes) close to the historic Roman town of Colchester.
  • The University is just an hour away from London and from Stansted airport (home of a  number of low-cost airlines flying to Europe), and half an hour from the port of Harwich.
  • There’s plenty of accommodation on campus, and costs are generally lower and the quality of life higher than elsewhere in the South-East of England.
  • Our staff have a reputation for being friendly, helpful and approachable.
  • We have an excellent range of facilities, including a brand new Multimedia Lab.
