BA Modern Languages and English Language

This is a
four-year course (with the third year spent abroad) which enables you
to combine a wide choice of English Language modules on sounds, structures,
meaning, use, variation and change in English with a wide choice of options in
one or two Modern Languages (French, German, Italian, Portuguese or Spanish).
You can start any of the languages at a range of different levels (from scratch,
or post-GCSE level, or post AS-level, or post A-level. Details of the structure

Your First Year
Your first year is a foundation year in which you learn about the structure
and use of English on the one hand, while taking Modern Languages modules on the
other. You take the following four modules in your first year (Click on the

Introduction to techniques used to study how factors such as social class, age, sex, ethnicity etc.
affect the way we speak English or
Introduction to techniques used to study how we acquire and process words and sentences

Introduction to developing and practising English language skills,
linguistic analysis skills and a wide range of transferable skills in
the domain of communication, IT, and project management.

Your Second Year
Your second year is a consolidation year in which we build on and extend the foundation acquired in your first year
while also preparing you for the specialist options you are to take in your
final year. You take four modules chosen from the set of options specified
below:

Your Third Year
This is an acculturation year spent abroad, either working as a
language assistant or studying at one of our partner institutions in France,
Germany, Italy, Portugal, Spain or Latin America. Click on the link to
