BA English Language and Literature

Elmer This course enables you to combine a range of English Language or Linguistics options offered by the Department of Language and Linguistics with a range of options offered by the Department of Literature, Film and Theatre Studies (Click on the link for further details of this partner department). In each year of the degree, you take four modules – two in each subject. Details of the structure of each year are given below. Your First Year

Your first year is a foundation year in which you learn about the structure and use of English on the one hand, and about approaches to Literature on the other. You take the following four modules in your first year (Click on the module titles for further details) uage, if you wish). You take the following four modules:

Foundations of Linguistics Introduction to linguistic techniques used to analyse sounds, structures, meaning and use in English
Skills for the Linguistics of English

Foundations of Sociolinguistics

Foundations of Psycholinguistics

Foundations of Teaching English as a Foreign Language
The Sociolinguistics module provides an introduction to techniques used to study how social class, age, sex, ethnicity etc. affect the way we speak English. The Psycholinguistics module introduces you to techniques used to study how we acquire and process words and sentences. The TEFL module introduces you to principles and practices underlying the teaching of English as a Foreign Language

Your Second Year

Your second year is a consolidation year in which we build on and extend the foundation acquired in your first year while also preparing you for the specialist options you are to take in your final year. You take four modules (or more if your selection includes half-options) chosen from the set of options specified below:
