BiographyHe received his BA (in French and Russian) and PhD (in Linguistics) from the University of Leeds. He came to Essex in 1967 from the University of California at Los Angeles. He has been visiting teacher and researcher at several universities, including the Ohio State University in Columbus. His main research areas involve the simulation of human performance by computer (especially the production and perception of speech), and he is currently working on prosodic patterns in synthetic speech. He has published a variety of papers in his area of research including several since 1980 on the application of artificial intelligence techniques in speech synthesis & automatic speech recognition.
