What?

The Spicer Library is a library for graduate students in the fields of Applied Linguistics [AL] and English Language Teaching (ELT). It is a joint resource of the Department of Language and Linguistics and the International Academy of the University of Essex. It is a lending library that complements the bigger Albert Sloman Library. It stocks a range of linguistics books (mainly applied linguistics) and ELT materials (in various languages) as well as being a showcase for PhD, MPhil and MA theses.

Where?

The library is in room 3.115, near Computer Lab D. There is a map that shows the way from Square 4 and a sequence of photos that shows how to get there from the Departmental Office [4.305] and Social Space [4.305A].

When?

Opening hours change each term [and at the volunteer's convenience] - so please check the departmental notice-boards/emails regularly for the latest Spicer Library information. PLEASE NOTE: Books cannot be returned outside Spicer Library opening hours to the Departmental Office [4.305].

Why?

Sam Spicer donated his own collection of books to the department upon his retirement in 1983. The books were lent out to students and the library grew from there. The responsibility of the library was then passed down to different staff members over the years till finally being handed over to the Current Spicer Library Supervisor in 2004 - Dr. Julian Good. For a more detailed history of the library visit the history page of the website.
