Female wheelchair user and friend using pcThe Department is one of the largest and most prestigious departments of its kind in the world, and has an international reputation for the quality of its Linguistics research. The results of the 2008 Research Assessment Exercise show that 85% of the Linguistics research submitted by the University of Essex was rated as “recognised internationally in terms of originality, significance and rigour”, and 25% was deemed to be “world-leading in terms of originality, significance and rigour”. Essex had the (joint) highest proportion of Linguistics research rated as “world-leading” in England. Current research interests within the Department include syntax, morphology, phonology, the description of English, first and second language acquisition, applied linguistics, psycholinguistics, computational linguistics, reading processes, language disorders, sociolinguistics, discourse analysis and dialectology, Creole linguistics.
