Information for Prospective Postgraduate Students
Opportunities for Language Study
Language courses can be taken on a self-funded basis by postgraduate students
and their partners (see the information about our
Open Language
Programme). The available options are French, German, Italian,
Portuguese, Mandarin, Arabic and Spanish, which are
taught at a variety of levels. Students can make use of the many facilities
offered by the University's language, computing and multimedia laboratories:
on-line computer packages and dictionaries, live satellite TV and authentic
video and audio material. Much of this material can be accessed 24 hours a day,
from any terminal connected to the University's network.
Also, there are free English classes for spouses and
dependants of international students (provided by the
International Academy). In particular, spouses/ partners of post-graduate
students have valued this opportunity, which has greatly enhanced their time at
Essex University in the past.
