This course provides students with a thorough grounding in current linguistic theory and presents an overview of the state of the art in the core disciplines of syntax and phonology. MA English Language and Linguistics

This course examines the phonological and grammatical structure of English from a descriptive perspective, and how descriptions relate to current approaches in linguistic theory. Students are able to choose a variety of English Language topics for special study.

MA English Language

This course provides comprehensive training in both the nuts and bolts of the grammar and sound systems of English, and in the sociolinguistics and acquisition of the language. As such, it is ideal for those wishing to go on to teach A-Level English Language. MA Phonology

This course enables students to analyse the universal and specific language patterns of sound and presents the theoretical machinery necessary for their formalisation. Students will also have the opportunity to follow certain applied phonology modules which will allow them to use the knowledge gained in the theoretical and descriptive modules to analyse developmental and socio-phonological data.

This course provides a theoretically-grounded introduction to contemporary work on language acquisition (acquisition of first, second or foreign languages), and explores methodologies available for investigating language acquisition from a linguistic perspective. Students can choose areas of special study in which to deepen their knowledge.

Sociolinguistics

MA Sociolinguistics

This course provides students with the theoretical and analytical tools to understand and evaluate current work in sociolinguistics, and offer advanced modules in some of its most prominent sub-disciplines (variation theory, language and dialect contact, conversation analysis). Students will gain first-hand experience of data collection and both quantitative and qualitative methods of analysis.

MA Sociolinguistics of the Arab World

This course provides training in sociolinguistic theory and research methods, in the analysis of Arabic data within the framework of sociolinguistic theory, and tuition in the external and internal histories of Arabic.

MA Varieties of English

This course provides students with a solid grounding in the structural variation that exists in the English speaking world, the historical origins of that variation and the social context in which that variation exists. Students also have the opportunity to engage in their own research on accent and dialect variation in English.

Translation, interpreting and subtitling

PG Diploma Chinese-English Translation and Interpreting

Building on our internationally-recognised expertise in English language and linguistics and the teaching of practical foreign language skills, this new course introduces you to the knowledge and skills required to work in translation and interpreting in the modern world.

We are offering five competitive scholarships of £1,000 each to support students studying this course(and our MA Chinese-English Translation and Interpreting). If you apply to the course you will automatically be considered for the scholarship, which will be awarded based on performance in your previous qualifications and the score on your aptitude test.

If you have the appropriate qualifications you can take this course without completing the Postgraduate Diploma first (please see entry requirements).

MRes Linguistics

This graduate programme provides students with the opportunity to become familiar with contemporary approaches to the study of language and to develop a critical, in-depth comprehension or one or more theoretical and/or descriptive sub-disciplines of linguistics. Students take two specific modules, one research support module, and departmental professional development training courses in each term, as well as embarking on research for their dissertation from the beginning.
