18 May 2012: Language & Linguistics student receives award from Wivenhoe Bursary Scheme

Steve receives his award from the Mayor of Wivenhoe - Cllr Bob Needham

A Second Year BA student in the Department of Language & Linguistics has become one of five people who have each received awards from the Wivenhoe Bursary scheme. The award is made possible thanks to the annual Wivenhoe Town and Gown fundraising dinner which seeks to reward student residents of Wivenhoe according to their academic performance, contribution to the village community and involvement in extra-curricular activities.

The dinner is held at the Nottage Maritime Institute in Wivenhoe and was set up in 2005 at the instigation of the then Mayor and Mayoress of Wivenhoe, Tom Roberts and Dilly Meyer, Operations Manager of the University Skills Centre.

This year’s dinner raised £2,000 and this was split between the five successful applicants - one of which was our very own 2nd Year BA English Language & ELT student Steven Bertie. Many congratulations Steve!

James Martin, Alumni Relations Officer said, ‘These bursaries will make a big difference to these students and will help them to get the best from their studies. We at the University of Essex are greatly indebted to the fantastic generosity of the people of Wivenhoe for making the Wivenhoe Bursary possible, and long may it continue!’

The next annual Town and Gown dinner will take place on Friday 23 November 2012 and the speaker will be the incoming University of Essex Vice-Chancellor, Professor Anthony Forster. For tickets contact Dilly Meyer, Skills Centre, dilly@essex.ac.uk
