Teaching & Research Facilities
Departmental Research Facilities
The
Department has a suite of dedicated laboratories for spoken
language transcription and video editing and analysis, and for carrying out
linguistic and psycholinguistic experiments.
Linguistics Resource Centre
The Department’s Linguistics Resource Centre comprises four
laboratories for the study of language production and comprehension: Our suite
of
Eyetracking Labs allow us to monitor people’s eye movements while they are reading
from a PC screen or listening to language. In the Psycholinguistics Lab,
we can measure how long it takes readers or listeners to respond to words, texts
or sounds. The Linguistics Lab has equipment for
the analysis of sound files. In addition, we have an archive with toys etc. for
studies with children and sample experiments that students can replicate.
Virtual Research Environment
We also provide a virtual research environment which allows
researchers to access and share tools, training materials and other resources
for their research.
Language Teaching Facilities
Our department utilises two
Multimedia language teaching
laboratories, and these are both equipped with state-of-the-art Sanako and Melissi Digital Classroom software. Melissi allows
you to interact with other language students, record digitally,
do individual and group work, and simultaneously work on videos.
You can learn to subtitle, interpret and check your own work.
There are also self-access facilities for independent language
learning.
