How our own Undergraduate Staff-Student Liaison Committee runs
The Department of Language and Linguistics has separate staff-student liaison
committees for undergraduates and postgraduates. The function of the
Undergraduate Staff-Student Liaison Committee is to provide a forum in which
undergraduate students in the Department can, through their elected
representatives, voice opinions about the running of their courses, the running
of the Department as it affects them, and any other matters which are integral
to their lives as members of the Department of Language and Linguistics.
The Undergraduate Staff-Student Liaison Committee normally comprises 11
student members and 5 staff members. The student representatives are normally
six 1st years, two 2nd-years, two 3rd-years and one 4th-year; the staff members
are the Teaching Quality Officer (who chairs the Committee), the Head of
Department, the Undergraduate Linguistics Co-ordinator, the Modern Languages
Co-ordinator, and the Undergraduate Administrator. The Committee holds two
one-hour lunchtime meetings a year, which are likely to take place in weeks 8
and 23, with a further meeting in the Summer term (e.g. week 31) if appropriate.
Student representatives consult fellow students about matters they wish to
have discussed by the Committee, and forward these to the Undergraduate
Administrator for inclusion on the agenda for the next meeting. Minutes are
taken (which provide a written summary of the discussion) and these are
forwarded for consideration at the next Quality Assurance Committee and
Departmental Meeting. A copy of the minutes is posted on the departmental
website.
At the first meeting each year, the student members will choose one of their
members to represent them at Departmental Meetings and the Quality Assurance
Committee (whose function is to monitor teaching standards and course contents).
