Postgraduate Study in The Department of Literature, Film, and Theatre
Studies
Research Degrees:
The Department welcomes applications from graduates to work for the
research degrees MPhil and PhD. Between them the members of the Department
offer a wide range of expertise in different literatures and in different
approaches to literature, covering most aspects of early modern and modern
writing in English and a number of other languages. As well as Literature we
offer a PhD or MPhil in Theatre
Studies, in Film, and in Creative Writing.

A Code of Practice lays down positive procedures and areas of responsibility
which establish and promote the working relationship of student and supervisor.
The Code is set out in the
Notes for Guidance which are issued to students at the beginning of their
research. The Notes also contain detailed information and advice about the
starting and organising of research. Progress is discussed with students at
regular meetings of their Supervisory Board, consisting of the supervisor and
two other members of staff, with a view to encouraging the strong points of
their intellectual development while conducting their research.
A regular staff-graduate seminar
provides a forum, both intellectual and
social, at which research students may give papers on their work in progress.
Visiting scholars are invited to speak about their research. Training in
research techniques is offered by the Department and is obligatory for research
students in their first year of study. Interdisciplinary seminars are also
offered by other departments in the School. In recent years, a number of
conferences held by the University have provided opportunities for research
students to present papers.
Each research student has the use of a shared study-room situated in the
Department.

Master of Philosophy
Research for the MPhil degree normally lasts two years full time, or four
years part time. Examination is by thesis, normally of 40-60,000 words. An MPhil
candidate may be allowed to become a candidate for a PhD if initial research
suggests that may be appropriate.
Applicants for PhD research should be finishing or have completed an
MA or equivalent degree. Research normally lasts three years full time or six
years part time. Examination is by thesis, of not more than 80,000 words (except
for the PhD in Creative Writing, which combines a piece of creative writing with
a critical commentary).
