Three-quarters of our research is rated 'world leading' or 'internationally excellent' (REF 2014). We do both creative
and critical work across genres and media forms using a distinctly comparative approach.
Literature was one of the founding subjects at the University of Essex and
our Department built its reputation on scholarly and critical achievements across English, comparative and world literature.
The addition of Centres for Creative Writing,
Theatre Studies, and Film and Screen Media further expanded our range,
and combined with journalism, a new subject area, give our
Department its uniquely diverse and interdisciplinary character.
Our research directly informs our teaching at undergraduate and postgraduate levels, and our students benefit from the broad
range of expertise and experience of our academic staff who include leading specialists in literature, film
and theatre, as well as novelists, poets, playwrights, filmmakers, screenwriters and journalists.

Throughout the year, we run an exciting programme of events, including research seminars, symposia, and conferences,
with speakers invited from across the UK and from abroad, as well as film screenings
introduced by our academic staff, and writers' talks as part of our Writers at Essex
Our University’s Lakeside Theatre runs a diverse programme of plays, live art, and comedy and has a
fully-equipped 200 seat auditorium and an experimental studio laboratory. You can also join our Lakeside Theatre Company which runs weekly workshops
offering training for developing performing arts skills. There are also opportunities for gaining work experience by becoming involved in the
theatre’s front of house and behind the scenes operations.
We have a dedicated 120-seat film theatre for use in teaching and our weekly
film screenings and our students also have access to our University’s
Media Centre which is equipped with state-of-the-art studios, cameras, audio and lighting equipment, as well as professional editing facilities.
