Exhibitions and public art
Art Exchange
The University’s art gallery is at the heart of our Colchester Campus,
close to the Albert Sloman Library.
Art Exchange
hosts an eclectic mix of local and international artists, from
well-established names through to emerging talent.
Unique Latin American art collection
Essex Collection of Art from Latin America (ESCALA)
is based at the Colchester Campus and has been built-up over many years
through the close links built up between Essex academics and Latin American
artists and the University's longstanding interest in studying Latin
America.
You can see pieces from the collection on permanent display in the Albert
Sloman Library and in other locations on our Colchester Campus. Exhibitions
featuring ESCALA work are occasionally held at Art Exchange.
If you are interested in Latin American art you might also be interested
in ARARA, the online journal
covering the art and architecture of the Americas put together at Essex.
Partnership with major art gallery
The University and ESCALA are closely involved in the development of firstsite, a major new art gallery in Colchester. Artwork from
ESCALA will
be displayed at the new gallery and our staff work closely with the firstsite team.
Art is all around us
Wivenhoe Park which now provides a home to our Colchester Campus is a
historic parkland which was once painted by John Constable. The painting now
hangs in the United States National Gallery of Arts.
Sculptures by leading Latin American artists are now displayed in the
parkland which you can discover during your time at our Colchester Campus.
