Learning and Development for Research Staff

If you're a member of research staff you'll find all relevant learning and development information on the following pages. Use the links below or the navigation in the 'find out more' menu on the right-hand side.

Research staff is a term used to refer to staff who work primarily as researchers on research projects. There are currently a total of approximately 100 research staff at the University; some of you may be on a fixed term contract. The need to remain ready and competitive for your next role will be important whether you are aiming for a career in or outside academia.

Researchers are a highly skilled and valued group of staff, and the University recognises the vital contribution you make to our research performance and to the wider community.

As well as helping to achieve success for the University, you also have the potential to forge your own career, develop further skills, and achieve your ambitions. With this in mind you are encouraged to actively seek opportunities for extending your personal and professional skills as recommended by the Roberts Reports and incorporate 10 days per year of personal development activities.

"Individual researchers share the responsibility for and need to pro-actively engage in their own personal and career development, and lifelong learning" - The Concordat to Support the Career Development of Researchers (Principle 5). Signatories include RCUK, GuildHE & Universities UK, June 2008
