Cadenza
Cadenza (noun): A virtuoso solo passage inserted into a movement in a concerto.
Cadenza is the University's professional development framework for all staff who teach and support learning. It is accredited by the
Higher Education Academy and is mapped against their
UK Professional Standards Framework. You will gain fellowship
status of the HEA, giving you recognition that is nationally recognised and portable. It is also the best way to plan and record your
professional development at the University.
If you have less than three years' experience in HE, are engaged in a minimum of 50 hours of teaching per annum and would like to work
towards a recognized qualification, you might want to consider our Postgraduate Certificate in Higher Education Practice.
What it involves
As you progress with your work during the academic year you will reflect on and write about your professional practice in teaching
and supporting student learning. The programme enables you to gain recognition for the work you are already doing.
You will apply for recognition at one of four HEA fellowship levels, with different requirements at each:
You will produce:
- a review of professional activities; and
- a log of professional activities.
You will also need two referees.

Cadenza is designed to be flexible and to fit in with your existing commitments. There is a rolling process of application, and assessment
panels take place each term. If you are a Graduate Teacher, you have the opportunity to complete Cadenza during the academic year and to achieve
Associate status with the HEA.
Benefits
- Sector-wide recognition - fellowship status with the HEA gives you a nationally recognised and portable recognition for
your work in the sector.
- Evidence of commitment to excellence in education - you will join the growing number of University staff who have gained
professional recognition via a programme pioneered by the University and valued across the whole institution.
- Recognition of individual expertise and experience - engaging with Cadenza will enable you to showcase your skills,
expertise and achievements in a structured and reflective way, whatever your career stage. This developmental process can have many benefits
including supporting you in the appraisal process, providing access to funding opportunities, helping you to discern and develop your ethos
as a higher education teacher, enabling you to articulate and explain your activities and motivations to external stakeholders and networking
contacts.
- Fulfilment of probation requirements - from August 2013, HEA fellowship will be a probation requirement of academic and GTA
staff.
