Study Guides
Working in collaboration with departments and professional services, we have
produced the following series of Study Guides for students making the transition
from further to higher education, written particularly with first-year
undergraduates in mind. We always welcome new suggestions, so if there is a key area that
you feel has yet to be covered by these Guides, please contact
Richard Yates.

The academic skills website
mySkills offers interactive guidance to students on a wide range of skills
such as research, writing, and giving presentations. All content was
developed by staff at the University, most of it collaboratively.
Plagiarism Resources
Plagiarism is a growing concern among academic staff, especially with the
increasing availability of cheat sites. The University has put in place a number
of mechanisms to inform students about what plagiarism is and how it can be
avoided. These include:
- The University's own online
plagiarism guidance
resource for students which explains what plagiarism is and how
it can be avoided. It includes definitions, common mistakes and
an online test. See also the Study Guide on plagiarism
mentioned above.
- Subscribing to the JISC Electronic Plagiarism Detection
Service (branded as
TurnitinUK). This Service enables staff to conduct
electronic comparisons of students' work against a range of
electronic sources. TurnitinUK is freely available to all
academic staff but there are conditions of its use. Anybody
interested in using the service should contact the
Learning
Technology Team
in the first instance.
- JISC Plagiarism Advisory Service
This
service offers guidance and
advice on plagiarism to academic staff and to students,
focussing specifically on how it can be avoided either by
encouraging appropriate academic practice or by thinking about
the broader issues of assessment.
- The University has published very clear
regulations on cheating and plagiarism.
