Resources for new staff

Short training courses

As a new member of staff there are a number of short training courses that you must complete as soon as possible regardless of your role.

Basic Fire Safety (available as an online module)

All University employees and students are required to complete this short course, either as an online module or as a face-to-face workshop which is available as part of the University's general events programme. It only takes around 30 minutes to complete, including the assessment, and provides basic information on fire prevention and University fire safety procedures.

Equality and Diversity (online module)

All new University employees must complete Module 1 of the Equality and Diversity online course, Equality and Diversity Essentials, within six months of starting. The module introduces the concepts of equal opportunities and diversity, and provides an overview of the main legislation and its implications.

Recruitment and Selection Briefing

This briefing is specifically designed for anyone who will be Chairing or sitting on selection panels or committees. The University is required to ensure that recruitment is carried out in accordance with legislation and that discrimination does not take place, therefore it is mandatory for all members of staff directly involved in recruitment and selection to undertake relevant training.

Things to remember

As a new member of staff you may like to use the relevant checklist to ensure that you haven't missed anything crucial.

Checklists for:

Mentoring

The University has a mentoring scheme for new Heads of Department and Deans, but all line managers are encouraged to find appropriate mentors for all new members of staff. The scheme has been designed to provide a sounding board for those new to the role in order to accelerate professional development.
