Session: This conference will explore the activities and findings of the University’s
Mature Student Retention project and consider how these could be adopted by other institutions. It will
cover key aspects of the student lifecycle from Access courses to pre-registration events and support
mechanisms built into the first-year experience. The work at Essex will be located in the local and
national context through presentations from colleagues at Colchester Institute and Queen Margaret University.
Presenters will include professional and academic staff from these three institutions as well as members of the
University of Essex Mature Student Society.
"Making friends here at the University came quite easy because luckily enough I went to the
University Housewarming event before the year started here, and I made friends on the activities that
were set for us. The event was really, really well designed and really well thought-through, and on that event
I made friends with at least two or three people, and we've been studying together all year, revising together,
all those sorts of things, and so making friends really wasn't as hard as I'd expected it to be."
Booking: Because this is open to an external audience, please could both University staff and external delegates
complete the booking form and email or send to Andrea Munson, Learning and Development.
