The University has a network of support services to help students achieve their potential and gain the maximum benefit from their experience here. Several are delivered wholly or partly by students and some are available outside normal office hours. Where a referral might be beneficial, staff are expected to keep abreast of the range of facilities available and actively signpost or refer.

This session introduces you to the locations, staff, and information you need to signpost students effectively to support services on the Colchester campus, including the Health Centre and Counselling Service, Accommodation Office, Nightline and Residents' Support Network, the Information Centre and SU Advice Centre, Multi Faith Chaplaincy Centre, Student Support, and the Harassment Advisory Network. It will help you to make effective referrals by providing information on the role of staff and giving you tips on when and how to refer, barriers to referral and support available.

Learning Outcomes:

  • Familiarity with the services the University provides to support students
  • Knowledge of the specific locations and opening hours of support services
  • An understanding of what constitutes an effective referral
  • Confidence to make a referral to a relevant support service
  • An awareness of critical incident procedures
  • An awareness of the support available to staff supporting students
  • Be confident in making a referral to a relevant support service
