This session will give participants a deeper understanding of the University’s budgetary processes. Using the ‘annual cycle’ of committee meetings to explain what we do and when, participants will explore how budgets are set, monitored and reported on, looking at the reports used by senior managers in assessing performance. The impact of devolving budget setting from the centre to faculties will be explored and the role of the Budget Review Group in the process will be explained.
By the end of the event participants should be able to:
- Understand the budgetary annual cycle and identify who is accountable for budget delivery
- Understand the key principles involved in budget-setting, the various different methods of constructing budgets and techniques that can be adopted to monitor performance against budget in-year
- Identify and interpret key budgetary information from standard University reports
- Understand the role of University committees, including the Budget Review Group, University Steering Group and Strategy and Resources Committee in the budget management process
